Monday February 15th
My beautiful wife's birthday and I'm at home all day with her to enjoy it. We head off to Southampton to buy some more jumpers for me. I have decided on my teacher's look - formal trousers, shirt, tie and v-necked wool or cashmere jumper. Trouble is that I have been surviving on one grey and one brown one since December so invested in a blue, green and purple version to broaden my color palette.
I have decided against the suit look and have not managed the 'slacks and blazer'. To be honest, I would much prefer jeans and polo shirt but if the kids have to wear shirt and tie.....

Day 144 - How Badly Can They Behave?
Monday September 7th
So my biggest nightmare is being soft on behaviour. I lie/sit there and think of all these different scenarios where kids defy me, laugh at me, swear at me, attack me (or someone else) and I am frozen on the spot, unable to take firm action. My preference is for some cutting witty remark that stops them in their tracks and there is no more trouble but I know that is fantasy land.
Even standing in the corridor and checking uniforms (top button done up, tie up to the collar, shirt tucked in) is a dilemma. How do you be consistent if you know that a. say it once you have to say it a thousand times and b. once they walk round the corner, they undo their top button again.
At the staff meeting today, I received a weighty copy of the behaviour policy and had a talk from the child protection officers. We have a 'Referral Form' which we need to fill in and pass to senior management if we punish anyone. The list of misdemeanours is priceless - swearing, smoking, drugs, alcohol, not working. Also priceless is what you need to refer to the CPO - pregnancy, abortion, drug abuse. Not much of that to deal with at Diageo.
Day 90 - 87%: Not Bad For a Teacher
Wednesday July 15th
Attempt my first 2 GCSE papers. I get them done in an hour each and self mark 87% with a bunch of stupid mistakes. Feel pretty good about that and vow to do more. This dream is interrupted by return of Ellen and Ted from taking tests at Kings'. In the Literacy test, they are asked for an alternative word for strong as in "only the strong survive". Ellen suggests muscular while Ted surpasses himself with buff. God help us. Ellen has also picked up her new uniform and is torn between excitement and dismay. This is fun to watch.
Head back to the house for more cleaning so that it's ready for our worldly belongings tomorrow
