Tuesday March 30th
I spent this morning at Alice's school, St Faith's Primary. I sat in with their Year 6 class to get a feel for how Maths is taught in Key Stage 2 - the year before they come to Kings'.
It's such a tiny school with no more than 20 in the class with loads of room to work with. That's one of my big issues with Kings', the size of the classrooms. It really feels like you are hemmed in between the teacher's desk, the whiteboard and all the computer wires. I am very prone to trip over something at least once.
The teacher did some very good differentiation for the class. Given the whole of Year 6 are together, there must be a wide range of ability and therefore differentiated work is more critical. It was a good learning for me, an area I am not brilliant at.

Day 82 - The Wykeham Arms
Alice had her first day at St Faiths yesterday and some kid called Theo threw pebbles at her. Nice. They only get worse as they get older and then they come to Kings'
The Maths staff room is very interesting as it is all women. The two male Maths teachers are both Heads of Year and so are out and about all day. They are all characters and sitting with them over lunch is quite daunting. I think I am going to have to find ways to get out and about myself.
Went to pick up our new car - a 3 year old Renault Scenic with 7 seats and then went out for a drink with Kevin. Kevin used to work for me 11 years ago so it's a legitimate first foray into pub going. He took me to the Wykeham Arms about which I got very excited as I could see me taking the boys from Hastings there for a few pints and a game of darts.
Day 78 - 11 Weeks
Friday July 3rd
11 weeks since I left Diageo slipped past unnoticed yesterday. So much has happened that I didn't stop to think about it but I did do a conference call to discuss the Whisky Strategy meeting I am facilitating in under two weeks time. I proceed with mixed emotions as the adrenaline definitely kicks in when I think about what should be done but there is still a very marked reluctance to dedicate the time and energy to prepare. It was a good call but I could have, should have, would have done more to be prepared. I think that's who I am rather than Diageo but I do need to get more disciplined as there is no way I can ad-lib 20 lessons a week.
Spent another day in Winchester. We all went to see 2 St Edmunds and take a few notes and then I took Ted and Ellen to look at cars while Mrs N took Alice to St Faiths to meet her new teachers. Poor mite, she finishes Hillside on June 25th and then goes back to school next week...in uniform. She is being very brave about it.
We test drove the Scenic and we like dit so it looks like the famous Nichols "See it, Buy it" modus operandi will kick in tomorrow as we are going back tomorrow to make an offer.
